Benemid is a drug used in hyperuricemia and chronic gout, in the use of diuretics, as well as an adjunct in antibiotic treatment.

Ingredients: The main ingredient is probenecid.

How does the drug work?

The drug inhibits the reabsorption of uric acid in the renal tubules and thus enhances its excretion. An increase in uric acid excretion by probenecid can lead to an increase in the release of uric acid from tophi into the blood plasma, which, in turn, can cause an acute attack of gout. In addition, probenecid can delay the excretion of other drugs by the kidneys, increasing their plasma concentrations, which allows the use of probenecid as an additional agent in antibiotic therapy.

How to use and dosage.

For chronic gout, 250 mg 2 times a day.
When treated together with antibiotics in adults 500 mg 4 times a day.
For gonorrhea, 1 g 30 minutes before antibiotic administration.

Side effects: nausea, vomiting, anorexia, sore gums, headache, dizziness, fever, itching, redness.
Contraindications: acute attack of gout, urolithiasis, porphyria, pregnancy, children under 2 years of age.
