Description
Baclofen is a centrally acting muscle relaxant. It is used for spastic conditions of skeletal muscles caused by neurological diseases (multiple sclerosis, chronic myelopathy, stroke, degenerative diseases of the spinal cord). Painful skeletal muscle spasm due to damage to the spine (cervical and lumbar syndromes) or occurring after hernia surgery.
Ingredients: the main component is baclofen.
Auxiliary components: lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, stearic acid, silicon dioxide.
How does the drug work?
The main point of application of its action is in the spinal cord. By stimulating presynaptic α2-adrenergic receptors, it inhibits the release of excitatory amino acids that stimulate N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors. As a result, at the level of intermediate neurons of the spinal cord, polysynaptic transmission of excitation is suppressed. Since it is this mechanism that is responsible for excessive muscle tone, when it is suppressed, muscle tone decreases. In addition to muscle relaxant properties, tizanidine also has a central, moderately pronounced analgesic effect.
Baclofen is effective in chronic spasticity of spinal and cerebral origin. Reduces spasticity and clonic convulsions, as a result of which resistance to passive movements decreases and the volume of active movements increases.
The dose, regimen and duration of therapy are determined individually, depending on the indications, the clinical situation and the dosage form used.
Side effects: drowsiness, dizziness, insomnia, sleep disturbance, dry mouth, nausea, muscle weakness.
Contraindications: hypersensitivity to tizanidine, impaired liver function, age up to 18 years.
