Description

Azulfidine is used to treat inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. It can also be used as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and the effect in use has been positive.

Composition: main active ingredient: sulfazalazine.
Analogues: Sulfasazalin.

How does the drug work?

Sulfasalazine selectively accumulates in the connective tissue of the intestine with the release of 5-aminosalicylic acid, which has anti-inflammatory activity, and sulfapyridine, which has an antimicrobial effect.

How to take and dosage.

Nonspecific ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease: when taken orally in adults, apply after meals: on the 1st day, 500 mg 4 times / day; on the 2nd day, 1 g 4 times / day; on the 3rd and subsequent days, 1.5-2 g 4 times / day. After subsiding of acute clinical symptoms, a maintenance dose of 500 mg 3-4 times / day is used for several months. Children aged 5-7 years – 250-500 mg 3-6 times / day, over 7 years old – 500 mg 3-6 times / day.
Rheumatoid arthritis: adults during the first week – 500 mg 1 time / day; within 2 weeks – 500 mg 2 times / day; within 3 weeks – 500 mg 3 times / day. The therapeutic dose is 1.5-3 g / day. The course of treatment is 6 months or more. Children over the age of 6 years – 30-50 mg / kg / day in 2-4 doses; for children over 16 years of age, the maximum daily dose is 2 g.

Side effects and contraindications.

Side effects: dizziness, headache, tinnitus, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, anemia, skin rash, fever, anaphylactic shock.
Contraindications: anemia, kidney and liver disease, pregnancy, breastfeeding, hypersensitivity.
